Sorry to say, a bit of a let down

I’ve been playing Civ since the very first version, and to this point every one has been an improvement, but this one…sorry but it’s treading water in many ways, and backwards in others.The new features; city districts - not very exciting to be honest. They’ve made a big thing out of the improved AI for other civs, which is fine, they have motivations and behaviour which fits, but interacting with them is clunky. You can’t really share a strategy; dealmaking is still basic and the interface with the other leaders needs work. They don’t seem that intelligent either; I’ve only played a couple of games to their conclusion but my tanks have been attacked by civilizations armed with only spearmen several times. The graphics feel basic and a backwards step from the lush colours in Civ 5. Being able to vew at night seems like a novelty you’ll do once to see what its like and then forget - a lot of effort on behalf of the programmers for not much reward. They should have gone for greater realism in my opinion; instead it’s more cartoon-like.On the plus side the government system, once you get used to it, is an improvement - more flexible and realistic. Great people system is better. Plenty of ideas dotted around as you progress which tweak the experience but essentially the gameplay is the same as it’s always been.I’ve got a high-spec macbook pro, which should handle the game easily but it’s SLOW. I mean really slow, compared to earlier versions. I’m losing patience with it in a way I haven’t with earlier versions.Perhaps we should wait for the inevitable patches and updates.

Before I downloaded this, I noted a lot of reviews saying the app didn’t work on Apple Silicon machines and crashed a lot. I’m using an M3 MacBook Air and it works absolutely fine and has not crashed once. Really enjoyable version of the classic. Don’t be put off!
Great Version of the franchise

I have been playing Civ since Version 2 and have always loved it. After reading some reviews I was somewhat dubious but still went ahead and bought the game. After the initial suprise of the look - it is different from previous versions, I have really got into it. I enjoy long drawn out campaigns (Marathon speed on vast maps) and this really allows you to get into everything - I love the new tech tree. It’s well thought out and there is so much more to explore than in previous versions ( i was never a great fan of Vers 5). It is still early days yet but I will come back to this review at a later date. So far, no glitches to report: this Mac is a late 2013 M-Bk Pro but with 16Gb RAM. The processors are fast ones as well. This game is intricate - you can’t expect it to run on a basic model. Back in the day, my PC contained 333MHz of CPU power and Version 2 would always crash and/or grind to a halt in later games. I leanrt to save the game every 3 or 4 turns. This is a great version of the game - go treat yourself and enjoy.

I’ve played all the Civ games, and enjoyed most of them. This is a very nice addition to the series. No, it doesn’t change the game fundamentally but then I wouldn’t want it to. It evolves what worked well in Civ 5 and adds in some nice extra wrinkles with things like districts in cities. I’ve already found it to be one of those ‘just one more turn games’. If you have a Retina iMac, be prepared for the fans to ramp up - but it plays the game very well (do check the system requirements though, they are fairly high). On the downside, it has locked up twice - but the autosave prevents you losing centuries of progress. And like the very disappointing Civ: Beyond Earth, defeat appears out of nowhere with no clue as to what is about to happen (meaning you’ve little chance of saving the situation). Hopefully these things will be improved - which would make it a five star game in my opinion.
