  • For those who take training seriously, but has some limitations

    Nick G I

Training Peaks is by far the best service I have found to plan and track serious training. I’m not a professional, or even high level amateur, athlete, but I was looking for a tool that would help me manage my training in a professional manner and not clutter the experience with gimmicks. I wanted something that would enable me to follow the advice I had gleaned from Training for the New Alpinism — that would help me monitor effectively my progress toward achieving my climbing training goals. I am not interested in sharing my stats with strangers, gamifying my training, seeing where I sit on a leader board, or sharing my training “stories” and photos on social media. Training Peaks (TP) gives me what I am looking for. In truth, to really get the most out of TP, you will need to pay for Premium, but if you’re serious about training (as opposed to just exercise) it is worth it. And this mobile app, whilst fundamentally good, does have some limitations / frustrations. For example, it would be good to be able to drag and drop training sessions in the calendar the same way as within the web app. In addition, the user experience is a little lacking — the design is a touch dated, and would benefit from better use of colour and larger typography.

  • Like taxes, increasingly paying more for less

I have been a coach and premium athlete on TP for years. I coach people on the platform. The stats and general theory of the platform are great. However… Rates have just gone up for coaches and I believe premium athletes alike. However the platform and particularly the app perform awfully. A note was issued a number of months ago accepting that performance was not good across the board. However, with the addition of ‘value add’ services such as the presently buggy and beta virtual cycling component, I feel TP have lost their way. There has been a movement toward competing with the modern tech and more gimmicky aspects of cycling inside rather than the core that is their coaching platform. And to that extent, things are worse…much worse. The app is gradually morphing into a mess. It is slow and getting slower. Comments frequently fail to load or post. The same issues exist on the web version but are less noticeable…the app however has become almost useless it is so intermittently slow to say the least. I would love to say it’s my network or device, but everything else runs fine on this iPad and I have the same irrespective of local network or vpn. As someone that works in technology, as a technologist, it is not a local issue. But hey, I will continue to pay more, get less, own nothing and be happy I suppose. TP, please stick to your core business and get that right consistently before adding things atop it and then charging us all for the privilege of a degraded service. Overall TP just about retain my business, but the app on iPad is a 1 star as it all to frequently wastes my time and is inferior to the web based version.

  • I like my tech but I’m finding TP overwhelming

    Roaroaroa

I represent a new wave of user that comes from the Zwift indoor trainer market. That’s an over simplification as I also run and swim. So now I use Wahoo Kickr & TP virtual for indoor cycling, Garmin Edge and Connect for outdoor cycling, Watch Ultra for running and swimming and Withings for weight/body fat - all now feeding into my new TP Premium account. That’s the easy part. Trouble is I, and I suspect a lot of this new wave of user, have zero intention of hiring a coach and it’s taken until now to figure out basic things like that I need to set up an Annual Training Plan. First impression is that this app (web, iOS, iPadOS) needs serious modernisation and improvements in intuitiveness. Nevertheless I will review when I have spent more time with it. I hope it works out or I may just get a Garmin watch and do everything in Garmin Connect.

  • Mobile app for committed athletes

Let's start out with some honesty...the Training Peaks website lists apps that will update a PC/Mac automatically via the web. This app requires manual input; used with Strava & reading the help files on the TP website can really help visualise your workout planning and recovery. Expect to input your data manually on the iPhone or pay £120 for an annual bells'n'whistle TP account. Now I know what my tTSS & IF are (curious now aren't you...) I can rate workouts across the week; checking my resting heart rate upon waking and I have a usable program. Mobile, practical but takes effort. Comments boxes at end of add workout allows food input & other metrics CAN be recorded. Don't rush out & buy a power crank (eg Stage crank £700) until you've explored this app; just accept Strava's power estimates are just that - estimates!

  • I like it...

Not sure why this app gets such bad reviews, I've had it for a good few months and I really like it! Now it's the off season I don't use my Garmin 910 much at all so I really like the ease of being able to record my completed workouts via my iPhone instead of using a computer and logging on to TrainingPeaks. You can also change workouts and move them to different days if you need to, although it'll be easier to use the website if you need to change a few workouts at one time. You can also record metrics really easily via the app which is much more convenient than having to boot up the computer and log on.One thing I would really like to see is totals for the week displayed, ie planned totals and completed totals (especially time). But all in all I really like it and it's a great add on to the TrainingPeaks website

  • This is the BEST mobile training app

    Cycle speed

Fantastic upgrades have made this a brilliant app. I already use WKO, and full version TP. This gives me all my data on my phone. Synchronisation to iphone calendar means training appears each day on phone even if not opening app. Go into the app and get the details, check training load and TSB, or view historical race data. It's all there. The developers MUST now sort out the chart for calories in-calories burnt as if wanting to watch nutrition which most athletes do, it would be very helpful. You can use myfitnesspal app to enter nutrition data and the calorie intake totals appear in the TP app, but there is no same chart view of calorie intake against calories burn from your workout data and daily basal metabolic rate burn. Please get that there next!

  • Not for the weekenders

    Raging Horse

If you’re serious about fitness and competition then get this app. There is a lot of configuration and a lot of science behind making this app work for you but if you’re laser focused on a goal and purchase a high quality training plan to integrate into the app (MyProCoach, 80/20 Endurance etc…) then this will take your training from “Strava Social” to Stratospheric. If you’re looking for “likes, kudos and fuzzy feeling” save your cash. If you’re looking for a forensic breakdown of your abilities, some hard truths and hard work, get this. No one cares about your epic selfie on here or the group ride coffee stop. Just numbers and work. It’s beautiful.

  • Needs an update for trail running with lots of vert

    katiekat2232

Been using premium for a couple of years and it’s been really helpful (an older back of pack runner) but having finally expected to proper mountains for the first time pre Covid I’ve just realised that while Strava and Garmin both make adjustments for steep trail at altitude Training Peaks doesn’t, it just gave me a ridiculously low TSS for a massive climb which if I’d done the same effort on the flat I’d have got a much higher score for, which will render the whole training score thing a bit useless for the next few months. It’s probably ok if you are always in the mountains but it’s not working for us twice a year flatlanders. Strava and Garmin Connect on the other hand recognised the load about right.

  • Best for power analysis on mobile devices

    JoffDavies

The app is great for analysing power data on a mobile app, much better than other apps (like Strava which barely even shows power data). If you have a coach it’s also good for that but I don’t have a coach or structured training plan so can only grade it on what I use it for. However, TrainingPeaks is very expensive for what you get in terms of power data, Strava premium offers almost the same thing for far less money and if you are able to use a browser it’s basically the same. If you need to only use a mobile device use this app, if you can use a browser and don’t have a coach, save yourself the money.

  • Excellent

    Galloglas

For existing Training Peaks users:The app has evolved to a point where I now barely check the full web site. Everything I want on a daily basis is right here in the app. Presentation of information is clear and well structured and the app is stable and bug free. Excellent stuff training peaks many thanks. If you are new to Training Peaks:This is the de facto software for monitoring your sporting performance and improvement. The level of information is amazing but all of it useful. I can't imagine preparing for an event or training without training peaks and would recommend it to anybody that cares about measuring their performance.
