  • Glad it’s back, but they’ve messed the controls

Finally it returns to iOS. Sadly they’ve removed the previous control setup. I have played nearly every version of doom since the original shareware on my old 486 and a bit of a veteran. This version was great before. Since this was rereleased on an updated iOS the controls are pretty annoying especially when playing on a larger screen. Still has the amazing level design that I can almost play blindfolded. Just wish they would reintroduce the previous setup. Having the fire and use button on the right of the screen was far easier than having to touch the middle of the screen to open doors and hit switches. Not all of us want to walk around with a controller to attach to play the game as it should be. The previous control setup was decent enough. Just gimme the “use” and “fire” button back. Dying stupid deaths cos of the new controls. This game relies on quick movement which is hindered by having to stretch your finger across the pad to do certain actions and in a fight with dozens of enemies it means death is too easy to come by. 🤬Still an amazing blast from the past but it’s been ruined by removal of the old setup. Beware! The screenshots are from the older port of doom on iOS before it was removed from the store and not this version. Edited. Since I added my comment about the screenshots being from the previous version to advertise this game they’ve removed the screenshots and added shots from the new game. It only took them 4 days to change them since my previous re-review commented on it. If only they’d bring back the old controls as quickly.

  • OMG... current update is a shambles!?

Guys?! What are you doing with these Doom games on iOS?! This used to be a really excellent game for my iphone, but now... where do I even start?!Firstly, is it just me, or did the previous version of this mobile game have much easier movement dynamics? i.e. Pressing forwards now slowly builds momentum as you accelerate into normal speed - rather than just moving you forwards... why?!If you’re standing, literally, right beside a wall switch and press left, you slowly crawl sideways and then lurch over to the other side before you can press the middle-screen (open command) in time... Pre-update, this type of scenario wasn’t even a thing, you just walked up to a switch and bob’s your uncle!Re: Double-tapping for automatic-fire... *total face-palm* ...why not just have continuous-shooting on for as long as you hold the fire button?!??! You know, like the original game?!? To actually activate this auto-fire feature you have to time your finger-tapping with surgical precision... 90% of the time, you have just lost half of your health before you’ve even managed to shoot your gun properly - I’m not exaggerating, this makes a beloved, legendary game so frustrating to play that you’ll want to throw your phone at the wall before completing the first level! Also, picking-up on another reviewer’s comment, the game seems very dark all of a sudden too?? Sigh, oh well... what an unnecessarily disappointing situation... PLZ UPDATE SOON!

Wolfenstein 3d might have been the starting block but Doom was the game that really set the standard by which all other games would be measured for years to come. It would also showcase just what could be done in games!17 years on and it still sets the standard, now on the iPhone and iPod touch. The controls are excellent, the game plays beautifully and brings back such good memories of years gone by.The map designs are complex, the enemies abundant and ammo is something you can easily run out of (particularly on ultra violence!). I bought this the day it was released on the app store, since then I've racked up hundreds of hours playing and replaying this gem. Only thing missing is the also superb Doom 2: Hell on earth.

This game holds special memories for me, sneaking in a few levels during my breaks in secondary school, staying behind on a rainy day with friends, playing networked games of Doom. It wasn't my first introduction to FPS games, but network/online it was.I was on the fence about buying this, for a long time, in many respects I'm glad I bought it now, the game itself is still awesome and addictive. But in others I'm very disappointed. If you start a new game, play a few levels then for whatever reason (you forget for example) you dare to press the new game button rather than resume, that's it, it resets everything you've ever done, it doesn't help matters that it doesn't even tell you or give you warning like other games do. Equally as unhelpful is that, on the level select it doesn't tell you which levels you have done, or how well you did at past ones so you can go back and improve, maybe find those secrets you missed.Other glaring omissions are the lack of any Game Centre support, so no achievements, and no online multiplayer! This game literally started online multiplayer shooters, why doesn't it have it?The core game is still there, good as ever, but on the iPhone it's full of promise and what could have been. Unfulfilled, and not recommended, for now.

  • Excellent port, let down by a terrible save bug.

Exactly what you expect from the original and best, DOOM! The touch control system takes a little getting used to and isn't perfect, but can be configured in a variety of ways to suit every taste. My biggest complaint that brought the overall score down is a nasty save bug. If you die and then exit to iOS or go into sleep mode, the game will save you as dead and the level must be restarted without any weapons accrued! Makes it very tough at times. Also a similar problem if you exit a level earlier than intended and then restart game to reload the save; you will find yourself back at the save point but with no keys or certain other items collected! I played through despite these issues but it marred an otherwise nostalgic experience.

  • If you are gonna get doom read this

This is a great game. I love the concept and how you blast aliens and other creatures and monsters, but the moving controls do need work on. And when you try to open doors it’s hard to figure out how. So if you could hint it a bit more that would be great. Also it is really hard. But I guess that is the point of the game. You need to practice a lot to enjoy it. And to learn how to play that’s something you gotta do. And maybe more/more powerful weapons. Also you can’t move the gun cursor to aim, so when you shoot the gun/weapon you have to wait for the cursor to go red and only then it hits the alien/monster. But overall it’s a great and classic shooter game.

  • Thank you, but please fix controls

    Sw54367

Great to see Doom updated to a supported version of iOS!However, I find the controls are a struggle compared the the old version. Having to double tap to commence auto shoot is a pain. I for one would prefer to simply hold down fire to continue shooting. Also doing a 180 degree turn now requires multiple swipes which just gets me shot.If there is an opinion that the new controls are better then how about just putting in a switchable option to allow the old style controls. Finally, the 'use' action seems awkward. I don't recall how it used to operate but in my mind this also used to be more intuitive.Either way though well done and thanks!!

  • Legendary game,nuff said =]

    Phobos6666

It's great to see this version is still receiving update's. Played this since a young child ( and yet i'm not a gun crazed looney as the media would say). Truly the best game. Now if we can get doom 3 (same as pc),doom 2,quake (all) and commander keen it would really make my day or week or month or year, however long it takes to complete it all ( including all difficulties). Would also be very nice if we could get an extra chapter too. But I think i'm being a little too demanding at this point,no pressure. Though I wonder if the dev's read the reviews, if so get back to work you slacker's and make all the above, only joking. Unless you want more money.....

  • Perfect Port

    Fiol68578

With a little trepidation I purchased, for the previous reviewers expressed controller issues. Now, I'm genuinely someone who plays video games with style, smoothness and much skill, and if it's possible with what's offered, I'll accomplish that pretty quick. I notice most players rarely do - often jerky they are, hasty with their desire to race through their latest quick fix insatiable, blundering like a simian in distraction. The controls on Doom for iOS are fantastic, and anyone who is struggling, well, it's through no fault of the developer's excellence provided. By far the best shooter ever made, I feel, for it is one that that understands the simplicity of satisfaction. Most Excellent Fun.

  • Hold on to yer lugnuts, it's tiiime for an overhaul!!

    NuLegend1992

Who would've seen it coming? Doom Classic has been around for a long time now on iOS, and now it's been brought back with one hell of a makeover! The game itself plays exactly the same as it did in the last release, only now the main menu and control icons have been remade with new graphics, and the game itself is now rendered in glorious retina display mode. The new price of £1.49 should easily win over anyone who's interested in downloading it for the first time, and for those who have already downloaded the last version, this is an update that's not to be missed!!
